Ch 14
Listening and responding effectively in the workplace is important. Effective
listening will produce a better workplace and better relationships among employees.
Better listening will lead to a more effective response. You must be aware of listening
actively and think about the purpose of the conversation. Another factor to listening is
adjusting your attention. Each situation requires a different amount of attention.
A successful delivery of a presentation requires much preparation. This
preparation includes knowing your audience and the purpose of your presentation. The
purpose of your presentation will help you to determine how much information is needed
in order to get your point across to the audience. This leads to how to organize the
information needed. It must be delivered in a way that makes sense to your audience.
Practice is key.
Getting your point across in a time-sensitive situation requires organization. You
must determine the most essential information and your key audience. Time limits might
require you to simplify your information with graphics and bullet points. The slides must
be easy and quick to read, only including essential information. Practicing is even more
important for timed presentation. This will allow you to see what must be adjusted in
your slides or delivery. Remember you should not sacrifice quality for time.
As most things, conducting a meeting requires knowing the purpose of the
meeting and your audience. Having an agenda helps your audience follow the meeting
and know what to expect. Minutes should be kept. Keep meeting diplomatic. Be
respectful and expect others to be respectful, especially when conflict arises. Review any
decisions and discussions made during the meeting. This ensures that the meeting was
productive and all the attendees came away with the same thing.
Lecture 9: Ch 15
Web writing requires that information be displayed in a manner that will be read
quickly, yet effectively. Brief sentences are useful when introducing the topic. The use of
heading is extremely helpful in organizing the information in a way that can be accessed
quickly. Bullet points and subheading provide the same advantage.
The simplicity of web writing also caters to people with disabilities. Complicated
charts and graphs should not be used. Simplicity is key. Your content must be compatible
with technology that adapts to people with disabilities. It must also not require a lot of
download. International users don’t always have access to high speed internet. Keep this
in mind when adding graphics and charts.
Lecture 10: Ch 16
An effective résumé is organized, free of error, and easy to read. A résumé needs
to highlight your strengths that fit your goals or what the organization is looking for.
Organization includes the way it looks. It needs to look physically appealing and
uncluttered. Using the same design elements- fonts, size, headings- will help with the
appearance. The résumé must be error free. Be sure to proofread.
A letter of application highlights your knowledge, skills, and abilities. It should
make you be desirable to the potential employer. The interview process happens after you
have submitted your résumé and application. Before the interview, be sure to do research
on the company. Make a good first impression and appearance. Be aware of your
behavior. Your responses should just answer what is being asked, without being too
vague. Don’t ramble. Be sure to thank the interviewer.

Chapter 14
The important principles of listening are first, make a
conscious decision to listen actively, second, think about your
purpose for listening, third, take specific actions to listen more
efficiently and finally adapt to the situation. Avoiding
distraction and multitasking, for example checking your
smartphone for emails is tempting but prevents you from
giving your full attention to the message.Resisting bad habits
such as thinking about what you will say in response rather
than listening to the speaker’s points. Practicing active
listening techniques can prevent you from zoning out and
missing critical details.By asking question can slow down the
speaker and you are properly responding to the subject in
hand.Taking notes will help by focusing on what the speaker is
saying and adapting to the situation.
The preparation of a presentation is knowing enough purpose
of what you are trying for the audience to know. Drafting your
ideas can be your opening topic with selection of key
points. Selecting a medium that suits the audience and
location is very important. Gathering enough information to
be ready for any questions the audience might direct your
point to. Planning ahead is key to produce your point.
Conducting a productive meeting in the workplace is
essential. Meeting are to solve any issues from personal
conflicts among participants. To conduct a productive meeting
is knowing the purpose, who should attend, when the meeting
should take place and the agenda. The running of a meeting is
consider the feeling, thoughts, ideas and needs of others and
not to ignore other points of view. Always respond positively
to comments of every different culture.
Chapter 15
The important principles of web content are writing for rapid
consumption and crafting content for the web. The process to
create the content of a web is organization of the
material. Have the most important point in the beginning
adding supporting details and background
information. Presenting ideas and supporting all claims with
facts.
By avoiding frames, complex tables, animation, JavaScript, and
other design elements will help people with disabilities and
international audiences. Considering closed captions for
audiovisuals file will help the access of programs.
Chapter 16
The preparation of an effective resume is organizing it with
your best strength that fits your goals. It should be attractive
and uncluttered, also make sure the punctuation are used
properly with no spelling mistakes. Make sure to print in high
quality paper and printer. The first impression is by producing
a great resume that will catch the managements attention.
An effective letter of application should be marketing your
skills, abilities, and knowledge for the position you are
applying for. It contains four tasks.
1) personal introduction
2) explains to a particular employer
3) Highlighting specific qualifications
4) Opportunity to request an interview
To be effective in an interview first you need to get collect
enough information about the employer where you are
applying for. Your appearance and behavior should be
conducted in a professional matter. Your responses should stay
with the questions being asked and to the point.

The Landscape of the 21st Century Workplace: Emerging
trends you need to know as a career development
professional
This weeks business discussion explained 8 workplace trends
post the great recession. Explaining how the workplace is very
different pre and post the great recession of 2009. These
differences were explained as eight trends consisting of
1. Learning takes center stage
2. A culture of connectivity
3. Shifting demographics and increasing diversity
4. Globalization 3.0
5. The impact of economic turmoil and the recession
6. The Talent Triecta
7. The (R) evolution of the American worker
8. New work and the skills it will take to do it
Through these 8 trends the workplace can be shaped into a
better area since the great recession took place and effected
millions of Americans.
How does the subject matter affect your field?
Concerning my field of Social Work these 8 trends affect my
field greatly. In Social Work it is all about individuals
realizing and understanding instructions or process that are
being presented to them. The first trend of learning taking
center stage is very important. How can you expect anyone
brand new to a job, program, idea, ect, become fully enveloped
into it? Learning and helping each individual understand
exactly what is expected and the proper ethics go a long way
not only into the field of social work but all fields of college
majors.
Do you agree or disagree with the subject matter and why?
I do agree with the subject matter presented in this weeks
business discussion. From having individuals learn, seeing
how technology has connected us all together, and
demographics within the workplace being more diverse than
ever are just the first few ways explained to make a new
successful workplace.
What did you find interesting or helpful?
The information presented this week was very helpful and
interesting. From the article it was very interesting trend 5
explaining how economic turmoil has been impacted post great
recession. It explains how even to this day we must help
unemployed, underemployed and working worried individuals
in the workplace. Through the use of technology and a mixture
of all ages of workers, the workplace can flourish better than it
ever was since the great recession.

The Landscape of the 21st Century Workplace: Emerging
trends you need to know as a career development
professional
How does the subject matter affect your field?
The author, Caitlin Williams, gives us a quick view of the
landscape in the 21st century workplace. The mention of how the
recession of the late 2000s is mentioned to justify that we would not
ready for the changes followed by this event. In my field of Human
resources the subject matter is highly impactful in all ways. More so
in the demographic views that we can analyze in today’s workplaces,
diversity is very common in many type of workplaces. Human
resource workers must learn how to adapt the many type of
professionals entering the workforce who bring their cultures and
family values to their fields. It possesses challenges in every aspect
since workers who have been with the company are now learning to
cope with these changes. Now and days human resources must find
ways to help millennials work with older individuals who find it hard
to work with the newer generations.
Do you agree or disagree with the subject matter and why?
The subject matter could not be any clearer as to what is
happening to workplaces in the 21st century. Globalization is deeply
impacting the way workers are hired around the world to cope with
changes. Culture has definitely taken an approach to be more
connected thanks to the internet and the smartphones allowing us to
access it with ease. Organizations must now take a bigger role to
help workers know the required skills in order to stay current with
the times. The research is very direct it its findings and it is easy to
actually see it happening around us. Working for one of the most
famous national banks in our country I can certainly connect the
research to my workplace. I work with individuals of at least 3 types
of generations, baby boomers, Gen-X and many Millennials. The
younger crowd is changing the way we do business and they are the
current target market.
What did you find interesting or helpful?
The most interesting aspect of the research for me was the
talent trifecta because I find individuals with these capabilities are
highly successful in today’s workplaces. Agility helps to keep up
with demand, especially in this demanding market. Fostering
engagement is the only way a company will grow by having the
employees contribute to their success by allowing them to be
heard. Finally, retaining knowledge helps with efficient training
procedures, costing the company less money to place individuals on
immediate work duties. As a human resource major, this would help
me find appropriate candidates for many type of workplaces.
