Writing Assignment Week 12 Slavery Narrative of the Life of Frederick
Douglass, An American Slave
Go to http://etext.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public/DouNarr.html or
http://utc.iath.virginia.edu/abolitn/dougnarrhp.html
Answer both Part I and Part II
Part I. Pick one of the 4 topics
1) Variety of the slave experience
2) Masters and Overseers
3) Violence toward slaves
4) Problems of running away
In your paper use three examples (minimum) from the Douglass Narrative to analyze your
topic. Each example/illustration you choose must be from different chapters of the Narrative;
Show me you read the entire Narrative through Chapter 11 and stop at the Appendix p. 117.
Do not read the Appendix. Your paper is from the Narrative –no outside sources or text.
Do not cite the URL as we are all reading the Narrative from the assigned website. Only give
the chapter and page number within the body of your paper for each illustration you use. Cite
all examples with chapter and page number-not just direct quotations.
Do not write about Douglass’ biography or life story. Respond to the topic that you choose.
Show me you read Douglass’ Narrative by using illustrations and examples from it.
Part II. Douglass wrote the Narrative to encourage Northern support of abolition and to also
combat the Southern arguments for slavery. Respond to the two questions below.
1) How did Douglass (in the book) challenge the defense of slavery by the slave owners? The
slave owners claimed slavery was the “peculiar institution” and a positive good. The slaveowners used a variety of arguments to defend slavery (see pages 363 of the textbook on the
Southern defense of slavery). How does Douglass’ book argue against or defeat the Southern
defense of slavery?
This is not about how Douglass resisted slavery personally. It is how his book offers an answer
to the South’s defense of slavery.
How does Douglass counter the Southern arguments? How does Douglass show the Southern
argument was not valid or accurate?
Describe at least 2 examples from the Douglass book to show the inaccuracies of the Southern
defense of slavery.
2) How would the reader living outside the South at that time be impacted by reading the book
in your opinion? How would reading it encourage a Northerner to support stopping the
extension of slavery? Give at least 2 specific examples from the Douglass book to back your
generalizations.
Give specifics examples and evidence from the book (quotes, events, and people) to support
your responses.
