Islam and The Koran
Islam
• Originated with the teachings of the Prophet
of Islam, Muhammad, a 7th century Arab
religious and political figure.
• The word Islam means “submission”, or the
total surrender of oneself to Allah (God)
• An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim,
meaning “one who submits (to Allah).”
• The Koran (Qu’ran) is written in Arabic. Any
translation of the text is not considered to be
the true version of the text.
• Hadith- a collection of supposed quotes that
Muhammad said verbatim.

• Muslims believe that God revealed the Koran
(Qu’ran) to Muhammad, God’s final prophet,
through the angel Gabriel, and regard the
Qur’an and the Sunnah (words and deeds of
Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of
Islam. They do not regard Muhammad as the
founder of a new religion, but as the restorer of
the original monotheistic faith of the biblical
prophets including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
• Islamic tradition holds that Jews and Christians
changed the revelations God gave to these
prophets by either altering the text, introducing
a false interpretation, or both. (Encyclopedia of

The Shahada- is the basic creed or tenet of Islam
(Submission): “I testify that there is no god but
Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is fully
submitted and messenger of Allah.”
– As the most important pillar, this testament is
a foundation for all other beliefs and practices
in Islam.
Muslims must pray five times a day at fixed
times. The time of day to pray are at dawn,
noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and night fall.
They pray East toward Mecca.
Alms-giving- is the practice of charitable giving
by Muslims based on accumulated wealth, and is
obligatory for all who are able to do so.
Muslims must fast during the month of
Ramadan Muslims must abstain from food,
drink, and sex from dawn to dusk during this
month
Must have one pilgrimage to Mecca if one can

Main Muslim
Denominations
• Sunni- 75-90% of all Muslims Sunnis believe
that the first four caliphs (political and
religious successors to Muhammad) are the
true successors. They believe the caliphs
should be elected by the community. They
Follow The Koran and then the hadith.
• Shia- 10-20%- consider themselves to be the
elite sect because they are very
interconnected with the Islamic Community.
They believe that Muhammad appointed his
son-in-law as his successor and after that
only certain descendants of the son-in-law.
• Sufism- the mythical and spiritual branch of
Islam. Check out the poet Rumi.
