Critical Thinking Assignment 1:
Response to “The Plague” Video
Your assignment is to reflect on the video “The Plague”, and write a response paper.
After watching the “Plague” video, write a paper, using the following guidelines
to reflect upon ONE aspect of the video that you found interesting or compelling.
1. (3 pts) Briefly introduceyour topic and summarize the portion(s) of the video that
you wish to reflect upon (do not attempt to summarize the entire video).
2. (7 pts) Reflect upon ONE aspect of the video that interested you.Below is a list
of a few questions to consider if you are not sure what you would like to reflect upon.
Be sure to chose only one aspect to reflect upon, explain your reasoning (do not
simply state what you think but also WHY), and use specific examples from the
video or other sources to support your ideas. New paragraphs should have topic
sentences that refer to your introduction/thesis statement(s). Also, consider using
the “claim, support, warrant” method of explaining your reasoning.
Example:
Claim: I like to go to school
Support: Because my friends are there
Warrant (explains the support): My friends make me laugh.
3. (4 pts) Clearly state your conclusion(s)and the reasoning behind your
conclusion(s).
4. (2 pt) Your paper must be at least 1 pageand no more than 2 pages with 1-inch
margins, double-spaced, and 12-point font (name, date, title, etc. not included in
length).
5. (4pts) This is a formal writing assignment. Minimal typos, no “texting” speak,
complete sentences, non-conversational writing style, appropriate punctuation, and
proper grammar are expected.
If you’re not sure how to get started or what to discuss, here are a few questions you
may want to consider:

Given the medieval period (1340s) in which it occurred, did you find any of the
reactions and responses of the European people and/or government and religious
officials to the bubonic plague epidemic shocking or surprising? If so, which ones
and why? If not, why not?
Imagine that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa spread to the U.S. and then the virus
mutated to become more contagious. If such a deadly new epidemic with no
definitive prevention (such as a vaccine) or effective cure were to strike the U.S. in
modern times, do you think people would react with violence and/or with an “every
person for him/herself” attitude (as people in Europe did in the 1340s)? Why or why
not?
If you’ve seen the 2011 movie, Contagion, you can discuss the scenarios portrayed in
the movie in the context of what you’ve learned about the bubonic plague epidemic.
Here’s the movie trailer if you need to refresh your memory.
FORMATTING: Your paper should be 1 – 1 ½, double-spaced pages using 10 to 12
point font and one-inch margins. This assignment is worth 20 points.
