SCALE AND
PROPORTION
Elizabeth Mendes

Scale
■ Refers to the relationship between two or more objects
– One of these has a commonly known size
– Objects are usually compared to our own human size
■ Example: Our homes / workplaces
Scale in the Home – Standardization
Counter top height
• To comfortably stand or sit by
Chair height
• To accommodate ours
Kitchen sizing
• Made to fit our bodies and every day life
Proportion
■ Often used interchangeably with scale, but there is a difference
between the two
■ Proportion
– Relates to the general size of two objects
– Information regarding actual size (scale) is not known
■ Scale
– More strict comparison between two objects
■ Where the SIZE of one is known
Scale within Art
■ Scale within a work provides meaning, context, and can signal how we
should interpret an image
■ Questions to consider
– Is the work larger than me?
– Smaller?
– Equal in size?
Scale vs. Proportion
Statue of Liberty
■ Person looks small relative to the
size of the Statue of Liberty
■ The enormous scale shows the
statue is a symbol for an idea
– Represents an emblem of
friendship
Scale vs. Proportion
Statue of Liberty
■ Looking at proportion
– The features of her face are
equal to eachother
– Facial symmetry
– The face zoomed in looks
“normal” to us
■ Without a reference of scale (the
person) we would not no the
enormous size of this statue
