Praeger singer-songwriter collection series simply structured book claims to cover both the
words and music of Jamaica’s most famous reggae composer/lyricist/singer. Actually, a
biography organized around Marley’s recordings. The style is straightforward, factual, and
uncluttered by critical theory.

It has become increasingly fashionable among scholars, popular writers, and fans to represent
Bob Marley as a peacenik with a streamlined message of peace, love, and unity for the world.
In addition, one of the most enduring images of Marley is from the 1978 one love peace
concert, where he stands between Jamaica’s prime minister Michael Manley and opposition
leader Edward seaga and is seen holding their hands together in a symbol of unity above his
head.

Bob Marley is more than just an outstanding singer who invented reggae; he is a symbol
of freedom and black self-determination throughout the world. Reggae is more than a
provincial their world genre; it is a musical language that has been learnt by everyone
from Eric Clapton through the police to Lenny Kravitz and beyond.

Marley’s lasting cultural and political impact – his success in enabling structural change – is
considered more fully, which examines how he was co-opted posthumously by the Jamaican
state, exploited by the culture industry, and adopted by post-colonial peoples around the

In recent years, as remix culture has grown and spread, the music of reggae legend Bob
Marley has proved irresistible to that culture’s adepts. This should come as no surprise: many
of Marley’s songs are iconic, and are as familiar as folk music to a wide variety of people
throughout the entire world; another contributing factor to the proliferation of remixes is the
fact that the man is safely dead and the executors of his estate have proven remarkably
accommodating of those who wish to use his music as a basis for their own experimentation.

There are several possible explanations for the rapid growth of Rastafari. One major
factor in its expansion was the emergence in the late 1960s of reggae music, a derivative
of American rhythm and blues and Jamaican ska. Reggae helped spread the philosophy of
Rastafari to the wider Jamaican audience and the world. During that period of time, Bob
Marley and the Wailers were the principal popularizers of reggae. Before Marley’s death
in 1981, the Wailers, with albums like Burnin’ (1973) and Survival (1979), articulated a
message of liberation and redemption which had “the power to transform a world of
injustice and war into one of peace and love” (Reid 172). By 1986, the Wailers’ ten
albums had sold more than 20 million copies (Jennings 69)

Douglass, Ellison and Marley lived on racial frontiers. Their interactions with mixed
audiences made them key figures in an interracial consciousness and culture, integrative
ancestors who can be claimed by more than one group. The lives of these three men
illustrate how our notions of “race” have been constructed out of a repression of the
interracial.
