Current Aging Topic Assignment (100 points)
The purpose of this assignment is to: 1) discuss the current aging-related topic (e.g., latest research finding, recent newspaper coverage,
recent film on aging-related topic, etc.) and effectively discuss its implication for the lives of older adults with the class; and 2)
develop and participate in thoughtful discussion on the topic. Five to six students will be assigned in each discussion session. Each
session has a particular discussion theme listed below. Students need to find an article that highlights new information related to the
assigned discussion theme.
1) Individual Presentation – Presentation materials due the day before the assigned discussion session day, 11:59pm: Each
student will be assigned in one of the discussion sessions (see the course calendar in this syllabus for dates). By 11:59pm on
the day prior to the discussion session, each student will submit presentation materials (e.g., PowerPoint slides) that assist their
5-10 minute presentation in class. Each discussion session will have a discussion theme to cover. Students will research and
identify one piece of information (e.g., latest research finding, recent newspaper article, new film related to the assigned
discussion theme), present its summary as a 5-10 minute presentation, and share their personal reflection regarding what the
shared information implies about the discussion theme of the day. Each student also is expected to bring in at least three related
discussion questions to the class.
Oral presentation must:
a) Be succinctly synthesized in no more than ten minutes
b) Report reference information (e.g., title, author(s), publication year, publisher)
c) Present brief summary of the main information of the article. Explain how the article is related to the general theme.
d) Offer at least three discussion questions to the class.
2) Aging News Reflection Paper (2-3 pages, double-spaced) – Due the day prior to assigned discussion session day,
11:59pm: Along with the presentation materials, students also need to submit their reflection paper that summarizes the
content of the chosen article and discusses their reflective thoughts on the implication of the news for the lives of older adults.
The written report must:
a) Clearly summarize the content of the article. Make sure to highlight the unique, new information the article reports.
b) Discuss personal reflection about the significance of the information for the lives of older adults.
