PROFESSOR RESEARCH PAPER GUIDELINES
All students are expected to write a 10 page paper on a topic covered in class. The paper can
address a question on the syllabus or a question of your own choosing. A good paper requires
you to be interested in the topic, so remember to select a question that truly engages your
interest. Research papers must focus on analyzing a question/problem and not be
descriptive.
Once you have selected a question, you should provide a thesis statement, which essentially
summarizes your response to the question raised. For example: Direct foreign intervention in
Fredonia led to increased nationalism that gave rise to the Fredonian Liberation Front. To sustain
your thesis, you must provide strong arguments backed up by evidence. If relevant, you may also
reference relevant theories that can strengthen your argument. Your evidence should include
primary sources, such as US government, historical or international publications/documents
(CIA, Department of State, UN, NATO) and secondary sources. The Sojourner Truth Library has
an excellent collection of materials and very knowledgeable librarians. Please take advantage of
these valuable resources, which can only strengthen the quality of your paper. Remember, solid
evidence can support your claims and make your arguments more convincing. It is important
that you use credible sources. While online sources can be helpful, they may not always be
reliable or provide sufficient information to answer a question. If you have doubts about a
source, ask a librarian or the professor.
In order to be convincing, your paper needs to be well organized and written, as well as
providing evidence. An important step before writing the paper involves developing an outline.
This step will help you organize your thoughts and evidence in a way that ensures you are
directly answering the question. If it would be helpful, you can submit your outline to me for
review and feedback. Remember, the quality of your writing matters. Please be sure to proofread
and spell-check your work before submitting it. The Writing Center (OM B106) can help you
improve your written work, if needed.
Papers should be written in 12 point font using Times New Roman font in MS Word format. In
addition:
• Pages must be numbered
• Sentences must be spaced at 1.5
• One inch margins
• A minimum of six sources must be used
• Encyclopedias (e.g. Britannica) and Wikipedia cannot be cited/quoted in paper
1
When referencing or quoting an author, data or other works that are not your own, you must cite
the author, year of publication and page(s). For example: “Anderson argues that the support
received by the Fredonian Liberation Front from Canada was key to its ultimate victory
(Anderson, 2015: 176)”.
A formal bibliography that includes all works cited must accompany the research paper. The
bibliography should be organized alphabetically by the author’s name.
