Use of Social Media in Learning Institutions
Social media has found its way into the classrooms especially in the institutions of higher
learning and helps the international students adjust and settle in their new environments as they
study abroad. The media sources include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google Plus,
YouTube, WhatsApp, and MySpace. According to the research conducted, the universities
provide such social networks as online videos, podcasts, blogs, and wikis, and students can
communicate with their classmates during the lessons. Students become more responsible and
take control of their education. Their interest and engagement increase in class work as they
share tips on how to pass exams, pay off students’ loans, find summer internships, and
collaborate on a project with their peers (Blankenship ,40). Therefore, sharing information
through social media inspires learners to become more creative and reduces time spent asking
questions between classes.
The libraries provide support services for the international students as the learners start the
studies with adjusting to the new environment, developing necessary skills required in their
coursework, and creating awareness of the resources available. Precisely, the libraries do this by
setting up a technology hub where learners can access the online resources such as websites. The
social media has a large audience that one can use effectively to learn; for example, a global
community increasing access to the right answers and suggestions can answer a question. Use of
social media to share information is so efficient that the teachers can provide assignments for the
students, and this allows forming good personal relationships. The educators encourage the use
of social media as it is effective, and an example is that some people have found jobs through
LinkedIn.
The students who use Twitter for academic discussions improve their grades when both
faculty and learners engage as it allows those who shy away in the classroom to participate
openly and motivates them. Such a way of communication is congruent with their digital
lifestyles. Answering the questions on Twitter by use of hash tags makes it easier to find answers
and allows the learners to create dialogues for discussion. Working on team projects become
more comfortable when using social media as it increases the ability to hold meetings in real
time as the project progresses, and time spent to hold the meetings in person is used to work on
the scheme. All in all, the teachers can use social media to motivate students by sharing their
amazing work with the world.
The social media resources such as videos, tutorials, and Google hangouts are shared
quickly with the entire classroom. The tutors use the web sites such as Google Plus that allow the
use of Google chats to set up class sessions for students to collaborate through video, save for
future reference, and share with their peers who may need the materials. The use of these
resources eliminates the need for students to copy website links from a book and risk mistyping
which are shared easily just by clicking. The teachers also use Facebook pages to update learners
of upcoming projects and online chats to discuss books read in class which set students up to
listen and respond to other people’s opinions.
The college administration has also taken to social media to advertise available vacancies
in the institutions as their target use the digital platforms for networking. The learning systems
have portals where students can upload assignments, check for plagiarism, post results, and a
chat forum for learners and lecturers. Such institutions keep students well versed by updating
their profiles, and by the time they are graduating, they are well prepared for the job market. The
pattern created in the social media acts as an online reputation that someone uses to reference an
applicant when he or she presents a resume. However, the students should be careful with what
they share on social media as potential employers do a background check and see if the
curriculum vitae matches with skills demonstrated on the digital platforms.
The social media is used by the university officials to market and recruit international
students which is an effective and cost-efficient way to reach the target audience. The platform
connects learners of the same ethnicity within the host country, and they build new relationships
when sharing interests, talents, and passion. It helps them to adjust quickly to the new
environment as they participate socially and culturally which enables them to meet their
academic requirements. Sharing via the social media helps these students to cope with the
challenges as they adjust in the foreign country (Anderson et al. 27). Communicating with
friends and family through social media when abroad helps the learners relieve stress and
homesick. Therefore, they are concentrated more on their studies. On their return to their native
country, the students can still keep in touch with the new friends made and share their experience
abroad.
Before joining the university, prospective international learners go through a college search
by using various social media, which plays a significant role in influencing them to make
decisions on the course selected, and university. The students may even choose to learn on
digital platforms at home. So, they will prefer a college that is up to date with technology to
avoid missing any of their coursework. The international learners choose to study in Englishspeaking universities. The ones who are not well conversant with the language may use mass
media to learn by watching programs with the English subtitles to facilitate their visual and audio
stimuli, and online video sites will be also of a great help.
In a foreign country, the international learners may find themselves lost in an unfamiliar
place. Doing a research through social media can help one to learn the local language for the use
of simple words like asking for direction and showing appreciation when faced with difficult
situations in future. The students experience a culture shock due to the cultural differences as
they encounter challenges in performing simple tasks like buying food. The learners are
encouraged to build connections with other international students, create societies, and make
consultations with the institution staff to counter the difficulties, which is made easier by the use
of social media.
The international students will find themselves already settled in their new country,
forming relationships with domestic scholars. The social media enables them to make new
friends by socializing and meeting up to undertake projects that they have similar interests in.
The examples may be extracurricular activities such as sports and music, joining religious
groups, and working part time. Discussing topics relevant to their courses, TV shows, and
religion help these students learn a lot from each other regarding their culture to avoid conflicts
and misunderstandings even when it comes to forming romantic and long-term friendships. The
social media is not all about Facebook as it has helped the international learners adjust and settle
down in their host country, find jobs, and even marry.
