Part B
In this part of the lesson, you will be revisiting pages from previous lessons.

Now you will read and analyze John Steinbeck’s an excerpt from The
Grapes of Wrath.” It is the same passage that you studied in the
Editorial section of this unit. You may want to print a copy of it, so
that you can divide it with a highlighter or pen.

In this reading of the passage, focus on Steinbeck’s structural
organization. Keep in mind the many ways that you can use to divide the
piece. Is there a shift in tone, time, or importance of incidents in the
excerpt? Remember, it is ultimately up to you!

After you have made the divisions, study the piece to see if you can
explain why Steinbeck chose to organize it in that manner. (A helpful
way of doing this is to ask yourself, what difference would it have made
if he began with the information from the end of the passage?)

Next, complete the following sentence and use it as your topic sentence #1.
The author’s structural organization in this passage begins with
__________ and follows with ________________ ending finally with
_______________________.

You may find it helpful to consult the Tone Words, to find adjectives that describe your divisions.
