                                                       CLASSMATE’S POST
For the sake of discussion, I will expound on the neighborhood I most commonly deal with in the role of a Probation and Parole Officer (PPO) and identify the Rational Choice Theory. Most juveniles I encounter, whether it be pre-dispositional or post-dispositional, admit thinking about the consequences of their actions and concluding taking the risk. For example, several juvenile offenders accused of “breaking into cars” have stated they did not feel as if they were hurting anyone because they were not causing physical harm. Their thought process allowed them to view that the taking of another person’s property without their permission in order to make a financial gain was justified since they were not being adequately provided for in their home.
Our text suggests that the criminal justice system must make crime less rewarding by increasing the certainty and severity of punish. Personally, I believe the Louisiana Juvenile Justice System is too lenient on most juvenile offenders. I acknowledge that the emphasis on juvenile justice is rehabilitation than that of incarceration, however if we are to decrease the incarceration rates of adults, we must start with more constructive punishments of juveniles.
