Example:
A 12-year-old boy comes inside crying to his mother saying that he cut himself. He was
outside playing in his yard barefoot. He accidentally stepped on something sharp that
cut into his foot. He complained that it hurt a lot and that it was really hard to swallow.
His mother rushed him to the ER, and went in to see a doctor. The doctor asked
the mom for the son’s vaccination history. She gave it to him and it showed that he
received a flu shot 4 months ago, he received a tetanus vaccination as a baby but no
booster shot yet. He also received both the Hepatitis A and B vaccine. He had never
been hospitalized for anything before. The doctor began doing a physical exam in order
to diagnose the problem. He noticed that the boy’s heart rate was abnormally rapid,
and he noticed the rigidity of his neck muscles. He took a swab sample from the wound
and sent it to the lab. It stained gram-positive, but there was not much other
information that could be gained from the stain.
The doctor gave the boy a sedative to relax his muscles, which were beginning to
spasm, and an antibiotic. He then cleaned the wound on his foot.
Clostridium tetani
