Rewarding and Recognition
New Company Merger
As a new current manager in this new company merger, I have noticed that our
employees are having very low motivation at the work place and I would like to propose
the reward and the recognition system. I have been doing some research about it and it
states that both reward and recognition are used at the same time even though they
both mean different things. The act of rewarding and recognizing employees is one of
the ways of motivating in their daily duties as it also “changes work habits and key
behaviors to benefit the business” (Sirota 2005). Reward is said to usually be a gift
given to the employee according to their performance. It can be both informs of money
or an expense to the company and its never part of the employee’s salary. Recognition
on the other part is usually supposed to be more psychological effect (to appreciate
one’s good and hard work). These two can both go hand in hand and if put in place help
or assist to bring the best in all employees as it improves job performances and positive
competition.
More since the two companies merged, there has been stress between the
employees. It has been difficult for some staff since so many of them were not involved
in any decision making during the merger. These changes have led to stress to the
employees causing the decrease in morale and their overall performance. I would like to
suggest and encourage more information be communicated to the employees as much
and son as possible from the different company leaders. I think if more information is
shared, about what’s happening, what kind of changes are impacting the employees, it

will help in decreasing any stress or confusion that is brought about the merging
management.
Another problem that the employees are facing is the fear of job loss. When the two
companies come together, the employees from the two different companies started
having problems working together as a team. There has been fear and rumors that
some employees are going to get laid off and others might be replacing their job
positions this is due to the number of employees currently coming in. This fear is
causing a negative impact on the effectiveness of the employees to the company. I’m
also concerned that if not well handled, some of the employees might actually leave the
company for other jobs in different companies as their not secure in their job positions. It
is very important that the management set up meetings, so that all employees meet
each other and at the same time address any concerns the employees are having so
that all the employees are contended and secure in their job positions.
There has also been a lot of negative competitiveness among the employees. Due
to the fear of employees losing their jobs, they all become negatively competitive among
themselves and it is causing a lot of conflict and hostility. it is very important that the top
managers remind all employees of the consequences of negative competition and how
it can affect their stay in the company. Negative completion also causes a lot of tension
and conflict in the company which in turn causes a lot of poor attitude at the job site.
