The emergency medical services are the process of treating, transporting people to
the hospital, and provide immediate care according to patient’s condition that is
considered life threatening. Also, the most important reason that emergency medical
services were established to reduce the risk of loss of life by having specialized medical
providers while being transporting to the hospital. There have been many concerns about
the operation and the procedure of emergency medical systems to provide care to people
such as the system’s effectiveness. However, King County emergency health services
have a developed emergency medical service system that improved the patient’s outcome
through providing immediate medical care. The emergency care system operates with
emergency departments at local hospitals, dispatch centers, private ambulance providers,
as well as the fire departments (“About the EMS Division,” 2016). The King county
EMS’ system consists of many providers who working as a team and provide the
necessary treatment in both life threatening and non-urgent situations. Also, the system
works under the policy of providing a good quality care to people. Moreover, the system
depends on doing accurate researches to improve the care outcome. In addition, King
County system provides community programs and education that involve training, and
evaluations. Furthermore, the medical system in Seattle is considered to be the best in the
world especially King County emergency services (Eisenberg, 2015). However, despite
being recognized as one of the best system in the United States, the system is also facing
finical and organizational challenges that require immediate attention to improve the
system.
King County is geographically is one of the largest county in Seattle and has a
high-density urbanization as well as many towns. King County is the main county and
has reported decreasing rates of unemployment, and it is located in Seattle, which is
considered to be the largest city in the state of Washington. In fact, the region has 8,164
people per square mile, so it is being ranked in the top most position of having a high
population density in the state (Health Profile, 2016). In addition, most of the population
in the county is range from the ages of 17 to 50, which is 40% of the entire population,
and most of the people living in King County are whites with a high percentage of other
ethnic races such as African American, Asians, American Indian, native Hawaiian, and
Hispanics (Health Profile, 2016). So the King County is considered one of the counties in
United States who have many ethnic races and that why makes this county different from
other county in United States.
Education
King County Emergency Medical Services is offering emergency health service
education through community programs as well as many other educational programs such
as Emergency Medical Dispatch Program and basic and advanced life support programs
(Quality Management, 2016). The region has a highly educated population when
compared to the state and the country. This is because more than half of the population
has already graduated from high school and universities.
Overall System
The King County’s medical system is considered to be the best system in the
United States and provide excellent services to people. In fact, people achieved excellent
services comparing to other EMS system anywhere in the world. The King County
emergency health service has the best care for cardiac arrest patients and considered a
safe system, which has the high rate of patient survival from cardiac arrest (Eisenberg,
2015). However, with the combination of 29 fire departments, 6 paramedic stations, 20
hospitals, 5 EMS dispatch centers, and the pre-hospital emergency care and services have
been improving over the years (About the EMS Division, 2016). The system is providing
service 24 hours and helping and serving the entire county with high care level providers.
Most importantly, regional policies and standards have been put in place to ensure that
patient care is delivered at the same rate across the region.
However, the collaborative system has ensured that there is medical training
provided on a regional basis irrespective of the locations within the county (Stubbs,
Culley & Eisenberg, 2016). Since most of the residents are highly educated, the services
provided are proceed from the highest standards of medical training and practices. The
King County’ system encourages all its emergency providers to continue their education
to serve better in all emergencies calls. Furthermore, there is universal access where
dispatcher calls made through dialing 9-1-1 facilitate immediate responses at the scene
increasing survival rates (“About the EMS Division,” 2016). Each year, 1 out of 10
residents will use the EMS and firefighters who respond to more than 17,000 calls in the
entire region (Kudenchuk, 2015). The system works with all emergency department units
including the police, fire departments and local hospitals. Once dispatcher calls have been
made, professional dispatchers provide instructional steps for medical emergencies before
the first response team unit arrives at the scene. Afterward, paramedics provide advanced
life support care before patients are transported to the hospitals for further treatment
(“Enhanced 9-1-1”, 2016).
System’s Challenges
According to the King County City Health Profile (2015), cancer and
heart diseases are the most leading cause of death in the county and a high parentage of
the people could not see physicians due to high costs. Low income is likely to report poor
health status, which means that access to immediate care is still difficult due to
transportation problems and high costs of medical treatment. Unfortunately,
homelessness is still a major problem in all communities and counties. Almost half of
home renters and most of the owners are struggling to pay their most needs with most of
their income going to housing. Also, since there is high percentage of the people in King
County is senior above 65 years and older, there is an expected stress to social and
economic resources in the region. It is also critical to note that the population of the
region is continuous rising and this makes medical system facing more challenges.
Problem statement
Currently, the United States of America especially in King County spends much
in medical costs when compared to other high and middle-income countries. Also, the
region has a large working population, and the healthcare costs still create troubles from
seeking good quality care to provide the best quality Emergency Medical Services.
Finally, the system must receive enough funding to enable them hire enough employees
as well as update to the best medical equipment (Public Health budget, 2015).
