The CROAPI model is based on creating small teams (3/4) of graduate students who
typically have current or previous management/supervisory experience and who
follow the following steps below:
1. Current Research: As a team students should first carefully read and understand
the current literature associated with the foundational concepts of OB. The
foundational concepts of OB have been placed into three clusters. Cluster One deals
with group dynamics and team building, Cluster Two with job attitudes and
motivation and Cluster three with Perception, decision making, personalities and
values. For each of these three clusters, the team should identify and specify several
major PRACTICAL steps, actions and policy guidelines that managers can/should
take to effectively apply the foundational concepts of OB concept that have been
examined.
2. Organizational Assessment: As a team, students should use the practical steps
actions and guidelines associated with the foundational concepts of OB that they have
identified to assess selected organizations (either actual or case study).
3. Planned Improvements: Either on an individual basis or as a team, specific action
plans and recommendations for improving the selected organizations can be proposed,
taking into account each of the OB concepts covered and the proposed key guidelines
that the team has generated.
The CROAPI model is particularly relevant for practicing managers seeking to
upgrade their management techniques by quickly transferring current knowledge
obtained in the classroom setting to the workplace. By creating small consultative
teams of students (each of which is typically an experienced and practicing manager)
the learning and knowledge transfer process is greatly enhanced. Learning is further
enhanced by having teams of students from diverse international background. In an
increasingly interdependent global economy, the skill set and experience of
communicating and effectively working with individuals from different national and
cultural background is invaluable.
Students should be aware that the CROAPI model is inherently very intense and
assumes that students will consistently provide a very high level of effort and hard
work over the period of the course. Teams and students within teams who do not,
during the course, consistently keep working on each of the different segments
associated with the course may find that they have substantially and irreparably fallen
behind and that their final “products” (term paper, team report & integrative
presentation) may be below graduate level standards.
The CROAPI model is based on semi – autonomous team concept. Consequently,
the instructor’s primary role is to explain the “rules of engagement”, set the
context and serve as a coordinator/facilitator of various team activities designed to
enhance students learning process, and provide pertinent information about important
OB concepts.
Individual Term Paper
The individual term paper entails first, a detailed self analysis of your interaction with
your team and second, a critical evaluation of your team using the important and
practical guidelines and major steps associated with organizational behavior concepts
as an evaluative yardstick. In both instances (self analysis and team assessments), an
important part of this paper is for students to provide several specific
recommendations for self and team improvement. Finally, this paper provides an
important overview of the contents of the contents associated with the three
organizational behavior cluster of concepts that we deal with in this class.
Specifically, write a term paper detailing the following:
1. Interview each of your team members and to the following:
a. Briefly highlight the educational qualifications of this team member
b. Briefly highlight their professional and career aspirations
c. Briefly identify one important professional achievement that they are really
proud of.
2. With specific reference to Chapter 8, define the term “ Team Cohesion”.
Provide
an assessment of how cohesive your team is and provide reasons for your assessment.
Identify 4 specific ways in which you could increase the cohesion of your team.
3. With specific reference to Chapter 8 and material define the term “social loafing
”.
Describe 4 specific strategies that you will undertake to limit and reduce social
loafing by your team members.
4. With specific reference to Chapter 5 and the material on motivation, describe four
specific ways that you will adopt to motivate your team (and team members) to high
performance. Detail whether the approach you adopted worked or did not work.
5. With specific reference to Chapter 2 use the 5 factor model of personality to
develop a simple questionnaire. Use this to assess and describe your personality and
also the personality of each of your team members. Provide 4 reasons why such
assessments are important for the effective management of employees.
6. With specific reference to Chapter 3 and the sections on perception, highlight 4
important perception related issues that you should seriously consider when dealing
with your team members.
7. Identify one country in each of the following regions of the world: Europe, Asia.
The selected country should NOT be your country of origin. Reference chapter 2 and
the section on values across cultures. Look up Hofstede’s actual data on the two
countries with respect to Individualism/collectivism and Power distance. Create a
simple table. Explain what you find with respect to these two dimensions and
highlight its managerial implications for managing in an increasingly global world.
8. Provide a detailed summary of the presentation by the Guest speaker and highlight
4 specific lessons you have gleaned from the presentation It is also very advisable that
you start early in order to avoid rushing.
Though no limit is placed on the number of pages, quality should not be sacrificed for
quantity. An excellent and carefully crafted paper is expected from each student.
At least six scholarly sources (books or articles) should be referenced. The term
paper should be submitted to me, in class on Oct 13, 2016.
