has laid out. Employees are critical to any organization’s growth and daily activities. Therefore,
they should be involved when drafting ethical codes and in coming up with some of the goals
and objectives of the organization. It will help them understand its importance and how to handle
themselves in different ethical situations.
Culture and ethics of an organization
The organization’s culture is a system of shared assumptions, values and beliefs which
govern how people behave in any society. They dictate on how the workforce dress, act and
perform their job every day. Each agency develops and maintains a unique culture which
provides guidelines and boundaries for the behavior of members (Anderson & Englehardt, 2007).
It also includes the way a business treats its employees and its customers as well as the
community. Ethical practices should help limit employees and top managers from engaging in

Structure of the business
The structure of any organization shows the different levels of hierarchy that the
organization has and the span of control in each level. The aim of the business venture is to
increase its sales and to make more profits. However, the company can engage in unethical
practices so as to increase these benefits. The effect is that it can ruin the goodwill and its
reputation.
The impact of organizational structure on ethical practices is to guide all employees to
make practical decisions that will see that the organization does not engage it in unlawful
practices so as to increase their sales. The pressure of subordinate employees from the top
managers can cause the employees to participate in unethical practices. However, all employees
at all level should make sure that they recognize that their actions can lead to tarnishing the
organization’s name. Therefore, they should act in appropriate ethical behaviors at all times

Behavior

All organizations must specify what acceptable behavior is and what is not during the
process of hiring new employees. Many organizations more so summarize the expected conduct
of each employee in the job description during interviews. Behavior guidelines focus on topics
such as harassment, language and work attire. It is the role of each employee to make sure that
they put into consideration these workplace ethical behaviors.

Ethics program to increase ethical behavior within an organization
There are several programs that the organization can use so as to improve ethical
behavior within itself.
The first program is to come up with a code of ethics. The code of ethics provides
direction and guidelines for employees’ ethical practices. It also guides the employees to
understand the organization’s ethical expectations and the set rules (Code of ethics, 2012).
Through training on the code of ethics, the employees will get a clear idea of what the
management expects of them concerning the employee’s code of conduct. Therefore,
communication gets enhanced by promoting an ethical culture within the organization.
Secondly, the organization will have to make managers role models. In proper training,
designating managers as the role models will help promote ethical behavior. Managers need to
be chosen carefully. The profits having managers as the models is to enable employees to have a
guiding force to improve the ethical conduct. Employees will tend to imitate superiors if they are
ethical thus promoting credibility to the code of ethics. If managers adhere to the set ethical
standards, employees will feel less reluctant to oppose the laid out guidelines.
The company should also devise a way for a reward of employees for their ethical
behavior. After completion of the ethical training program, an employee can be rewarded for
positive behavior. The paid employees and other employees will, therefore, feel inspired to
continue to follow the ethical standards despite temptations that they face once in a while in their
duties.
Lastly, the organization should create disciplinary actions for unethical behavior. The
management needs to lay down disciplinary actions for any violation of the ethical practices.

moral training should be dealt with accordingly.
Creation and systematic application of a defensible framework to contemporary ethical
issue
The author will discuss a logical framework that can be used to solving of a moral
problem in the organization.
The first step is to recognize a moral issue. The decision should be determined if it is
damaging to any employee and if the choice has an alternative between right and wrong basis.
The ethical issue identified is a breach of the set organization’s ethics, rules, and guidelines that
employees are supposed to follow.
Secondly, the framework focuses on the gathering of relevant information and facts. The
managers should collect all the information required so as to solve the ethical issue. They should
consider all the potential sources of information have been consulted.
Formulation of actions and alternatives. Evaluation of decisions should involve some
questions which include what option will produce the best and least harm (Utilitarian approach).
It should also include which option best respects the right of all people who are at stake. It is also
called the Right approach. They should also decide on which option treats employees equally
and proportionately or the justice approach.
The fourth approach in the framework is to make a decision based on the alternatives
(Sterba, 2012). The best option selected is used to come up with a final determination of what to
settle on so as to solve the ethical issue.

The next step in the framework is to act. Many ethical situations are uncomfortable due to
lack of all the available needed information. Acting means making a final ruling based on the
moral issue and telling the employee the next course of action.
The last step is to reflect on the outcome. The managers should contemplate on the results
of their results. They should focus on what were their intended and unintended consequences of
their actions. They should also reflect if they can change anything on their decisions based on the
impact that they have realized.
Conclusion
In summary, making ethical decisions requires sensitivity to the ethical implications of
problems and situations at the workplace. It also requires practice. Having a good framework for
ethical decisions on appropriate actions is indispensable. However, employees need to be
accorded the accountability to ask questions and seek guidance in any of the organizational rules
and ethics that they do not fathom well.
