How voices have changed
1. The values of Puritans, such as piety, courage, and industry, went on to the Revolutionary period
but the importance of some of the values decreased and other values increased. The Puritans’
writing was revolved around God and showed a lot of piety. They believed that God controlled
everything and they also believed in predetermination. Although the people from the
Revolutionary period were religious, they didn’t believe that God controlled everything and their
writing showed more industry and reason. They believed that they control their own lives and they
didn’t believe in predetermination anymore. They thought that if you were a bad person, you can
change yourself and be a better person, and their writing showed that. Piety was still valued after
the shift from Puritans to the Revolutionary period but the importance decreased a little in their
writings.
2. Voices changed drastically from the times the first Puritan settlers arrived, to the Revolutionary
period. Puritan Pilgrims held their faith and religious tenets very dear. Not only did they all share
the same faith, but they all credited their survival to an act of God. As the age of reason dawned
upon Europe, schools of thought from the Enlightenment also moved to the American Colonies.
People no longer depended upon their zealotry. Instead, people became bound by national unity
and a strive for betterment and equality. The revolutionary period was still filled with Godly men
and women. However, justification for equality, natural rights, and unity no longer came solely
from shared religion. But from reason and logic.
3. The Puritans had the values of piety, courage, and industry. All their energy went to the devotion
of God. Their writing revolved around God, and they did things that they thought would please
God. In the Revolutionary period, the people still believed in God, but their thoughts changed.
They started to use more logic and reason to explain why things happened the way they did,
instead of saying God had done it. They were more rational and started to think for themselves
more. Their writing was more about secular thinking and logical approaches. In the
Revolutionary period, they started to rely on themselves instead of always relying on God. So,
they left behind the very strict piety values the Puritans had.
