From a close reading of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the concepts of social class,
women and virtue all become vivid and override others through the numerous literary
techniques applied throughout the novel. Readers become acquainted to these ideas in the
perspective of the characters residing in 19th Century England. These themes are primarily
represented by Austen’s excellent use of unique writing style to express various but distinct
ideas of value as evidenced through the novel.
One of the main and most perceptible themes in Pride and Prejudice is pride and prejudice.
Pride is a regular existence in the protagonists’ perception of each other, clouding their
judgments and leading them to make imprudent faults. Pride blinds Elizabeth and Darcy to
their true feelings about each other. “His character was decided. He was the proudest, most
disagreeable man in the world, and everybody hoped that he would never come there again.”
Darcy’s pride regarding his social position makes him overlook anyone that is not in his
immediate social circle. Elizabeth’s pride blurs her reasoning. Prejudice in Pride and
Prejudice refers to the inclination of the characters to judge one another based on
supposition, rather than their true personality. As the book’s title suggests, prejudice goes
hand in hand with pride, often leading its protagonists into making wrong inferences about
motives and behavior. Darcy’s pride is based on social prejudice, while Elizabeth’s prejudice
against him is established in pride of her own quick perceptions. Both have their own faults
but ultimately recognizing the barricade that prejudice creates, prove that they are capable of
change.
Class issues are everywhere in Pride and Prejudice. It is presented as a criticism to class
and a poison to society. It exhibits an over-emphasis on class and its meaningful role when
judging a person’s nature. ‘’I could advise you merely to put on whatever of your clothes is
superior to the rest—there is no occasion for anything more. Lady Catherine will not think
the worse of you for being simply dressed. She likes to have the distinction of rank
preserved.” This is a line of dialogue from Mr Collins speaking to Elizabeth. Austen uses
characterization as one of her main techniques in order to strengthen the ideas and themes
presented. Austen portrays Lady Catherine as a sharp-tongued woman and being Darcy’s
aunt finds no reason not to show off her wealth. She prefers to have the differences in class
clearly displayed and judges everyone based on their position on the social ladder. Darcy
eventually overcomes class boundaries allowing the power of love and happiness to take
over.
Jane Austen is certainly analytical of the gender inequalities present in 19th century English
society, notably represented through the practice of marriage. “Without thinking highly either
of men or matrimony, marriage had always been her object; it was the only provision for
well-educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happiness,
must be their pleasantest preservative from want.” (pg111) Much of the novel is written in
third person or an omniscient point of view. This theme is primarily depicted through
Austen’s own perspective and experience and thus turning the timeline more factual.
Charlotte, being physically unattractive and unlikely to find a job or make a living had almost
no chance of marriage. Her only two options were to marry the snobbish Mr Collins or live
with her brothers and beg them for money. Women in that age, having no independence,
had no choice but to marry for financial security not for happiness and the presence of love
in their life.
Pride and Prejudice is a novel set in 19th century England and a compelling case that
successfully suggests the ideas of pride and prejudice, social class, and gender inequalities.
The novel represents many features of society in her time which in turn contributes to the
themes. The ideas are discussed convincingly through the language features implemented
by Austen.
