, and empowerment in the United States during the middle decades of the twentieth century.  What forces shaped the formation of these movements from 
the 1940s through the 1970s?  What were some of the key organizations examined by the assigned authors?  Who were some of the key activists that they examined?  What were the objectives of these organizations and activists, and what tactics and strategies did they utilize in their efforts?  How and why did the goals of activists in the North differ from those of activists in the South?  How and why did the objectives of the movement for African-American equality and 
empowerment evolve over the course of the period?  How and why did the tactics used by various organizations and activists change?
