Assignment: Memo Request to Pursue Research
Typically before a writer would expend energy on a
researched proposal, he or she would ask for permission from a decision-maker
to start their project. You practiced writing a short persuasive memo in Units
1, 2, and Unit 3 Discussion. Now use what you learned in terms of persuasive
writing in this Assignment. You will write a memo to your professor requesting
permission to move forward with your topic for the researched proposal, and
provide evidence to support the viability of your topic.

Subject:
Request to Conduct Research on the Benefits of an Employer-Sponsored
On-Site Child Care Center
INTRODUCTION
I am writing to request your permission to research the potential benefits of providing an employersponsored childcare facility at my workplace. The increasing participation of both parents in twoparent families and single parents in the workforce has intensified the need for childcare. The
escalated need for childcare presents a challenge for employees and Bella Designs, LLC.
Employees are faced with the difficult task of finding quality and inexpensive childcare close to
their jobs, and our organization seeks to decrease the stress of family childcare problems at work.
CHALLENGE
Bella Designs, LLC employs fifty-six people, thirty-nine of whom are parents. Most of these
parents have difficulty finding adequate childcare that does not interfere with their careers. Failure
to obtain quality childcare increases the work-family conflict. For instance, the stress level of
employees with a time constraint may rise as a result of having to derail from their route to drop off
their children at daycare. Consequently, these employees may be late to work. In addition, child
care centers are often closed on snow days, which forces employees to stay at home with their
children. Hence, the lack of convenient childcare imposes stress on employees and interrupts the
organization’s daily routine.
POTENTIAL SOLUTION
An on-site childcare at Bella Designs will increase employee loyalty and morale. Employees will
view the organization as a socially responsive company that genuinely cares about its employees’
well being. Thus, employees will develop an emotional connection with the organization and as a
result will become more loyal. Furthermore, the organization’s morale will increase because
employees will not have to cover for coworkers whose child arrangements have fallen through.
Bella Designs, LLC will benefit from sponsoring a childcare facility in several ways: it will attract
new skilled employees, reduce its turnover and absenteeism, and improve its productivity. Today,
organizations are engaging in a fierce competition to attract the most talented individuals in the
industry. Providing an on-site child care will give Bella Designs, LLC a competitive advantage over
its rivals. Furthermore, many employees would not have to miss work due to childcare problems if
they had an on-site child care center. Productivity would increase because employees would spend
more time at work. An effective employer-sponsored childcare on-site is cost effective because its
combined benefits outweigh its costs.
RESEARCH REQUEST
To demonstrate how an employer-sponsored child care on-site facility will benefit the organization,
I would like to conduct research. Using the Kaplan University Online library and internet searches,
I will gather data to support the proposal. Specifically, I will use the following sources: Data from
the Women’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor, The Families and Work Institute, business
journals that analyze the pros and cons of childcare facilities on worksites, and companies that have
instituted child care programs in their facilities.
PRELIMINARY RESEARCH
My preliminary research indicates data is available to support this proposal idea and to provide
Bella Designs with the information it needs to make an informed decision. I have located a number
of companies that have on-site daycare facilities and have gathered information from their
experience to apply to our situation.
CONCLUSION
As a working mother, I sympathize with many of our employees who strive to balance their
personal life and careers. Furthermore, I am committed to finding projects that will benefit Bella
Designs, LLC and its staff. Thus, I appreciate the opportunity to search for other ways in which an
employer-sponsored on-site child care center will be beneficial to our organization.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to reading your comments on my proposed topic and
preliminary work. I may be reached at yourname@student.kaplan.edu
