Evidence-based practice is a practice of health care in which the practitioner systematically finds, appraises, and uses the most current and valid research findings as the basis for clinical decisions. Evidence-based practice promotes decision-making that reflects best available information, rather than clinical experience and perceptions.At my job setting, an example of evidence-based practice that is applied is the avoidance of needlesticks injury and reporting same when it occurs. Needle sticks injuries are so rampant and at an alarming rate among nurses. Since we as nurses, are constantly working with sharps, needles and with patients, we are constantly exposed to blood and body fluids and some of us do not just care to protect ourselves against the deadly diseases the exposure to contaminated blood and body fluids transmit by wearing gloves and practicing meticulous hand washing.Some of us who work as home health care and hospice agency as nurses are not always provided with the necessary safety devices by the agency and we run the risk of being exposed to blood and body fluids from needle sticks and possible infection from to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus, and other viruses and infections. Also, there are also some nurses who do not report needle sticks injuries to their employers for fear of going through the series of tests the employer might want them to and possible losing some work days, hence exposing themselves and others including their patients to possible infection. It is now the law, that employers use work practice controls and safer needle devices that are engineered to eliminate or minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens resulting from needlestick injuries. ANA has reiterated this law with the slogan: “SAVE NEEDLES SAVE LIVES IT’S THE LAW” (ANA, n.d)With this law in place, home health care and hospice agency workers are now provided with the necessary sharps disposal containers, self-sheathing needles, sharps engineered with self-activating protective devices and needleless systems. This is a step in the right direction that have impacted my practice positively so that I am not exposed nor my patients to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus, and other viruses and infections.
