Topic Proposal
For this element of the assignment, you will produce a short proposal for a potential
research topic for the rest of the course. You will produce a document with the following
sections:
Section 1: Topic Introduction (150 – 200 words)
For this first section, you will describe your research topic, explain why you are
interested in it, and explain how you will go about researching the subject. This could
include discussing particular journals where you can find research on the subject. At the
end of this section, you should include 5 keywords – at minimum – that you will use to
search scholarly databases. This is the only section in which you can use first person (I,
me, my, we, our).
Section 2: Conversations Description (400-500 words)
In this second section, you will describe the important points of conversation among
scholars related to your selected topic. Your job here is not to respond to or evaluate
these conversations, but to simply describe them. For example, in one of my own fields
of study—feminism, there is an ongoing discussion about how to address social
inequality. If I were writing this section of the assignment for myself, I would simply
describe the reasons people on each side of that debate give to support their positions.
Section 3: Potential Research Questions (4 questions – graded for completion)
For this final section, you will draft 4 potential research questions you could ask about
your subject. This is simply to give me some information about your interests moving
forward. I will help you refine and focus these questions as we move forward.
*If you can help it, please avoid the following topics, as your point of view on them is not
likely to change throughout the course of the semester: marijuana legalization, abortion,
drinking age, and capital punishment.
