Unit I Essay
Instructions
Imagine that a planned unit development consisting of large single-family homes is being proposed in your jurisdiction. The developer recently completed a similar project in a neighboring city that required residential sprinklers to be installed in the homes. Although residential sprinklers are not required in your jurisdiction, the planning committee would like information in order to help them decide if residential sprinklers should be included in the new development. To help them with their decision, they have requested that the fire department provide information explaining fire behavior in a home and the benefits of smoke detectors and residential sprinklers.
Assume the role of a representative from the fire department, and prepare a two-page report for the planning committee that addresses the items listed below.
Explain how fire can develop in a single family home.
Explain why water is used as an extinguishing agent and how it extinguishes fires.
Explain the benefits of installing fire protection systems (smoke detection and fire sprinklers) in single-family homes. As a part of your discussion of the benefits of residential sprinklers, include specific residential sprinkler experience data (fatalities, fire loss) from at least one community that has enacted residential sprinkler legislation.
Support your assignment with at least two sources from the CSU Online Library. All information from outside sources must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA citations.

Unit II Scholarly Activity
Instructions
Assume that you currently serve as the fire inspector for a municipal fire department and are considered as the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). A newly planned community is being developed within your jurisdiction, and you have the authority to approve the fire protection water supply system prior to installation. Additionally, you will be responsible for ensuring that inspections and testing of the fire protection water supply system is completed prior to the certification of any occupancy within the planned community. The planned community includes single-family dwellings; multi-family dwellings; commercial buildings, including businesses and mercantile occupancies; and assembly occupancies.
As a part of your responsibilities as a fire inspector, you are to ensure that the appropriate type of hydrant is installed and that spacing is in accordance with the local code based on the occupancy types. Compile a report that includes the elements listed below.
Identify the type of hydrant to be installed, and explain why that type of hydrant was chosen.
Describe how the new hydrants would be inspected and tested.
Provide the spacing requirements based on your local jurisdiction’s requirements or policies (this should be where you work or where you reside).
Include a diagram detailing these spacing requirements, and note any local challenges.
List what the maintenance and inspection requirements will be and who will be responsible for handling each of those tasks.
Your report should be two pages in length. Any sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Any references and citations used should be in APA style.
