Reading material: Sonny’s Blues, Hills Like White Elephants, Girl, The Yellow Wallpaper, Recitatif, Never Let Me Go, My Last Duchess, We Real Cool, Dover Beach
 
 
Length of paper: 4-5 pages, typed and double-spaced, 12-point font.
 
Purpose: Write a short essay comparing and/or contrasting two thematically related works from two different genres. Possible themes include (but are not limited to) the following: gender, family, love, relationships, power, ethics, justice, nature, beauty, art, or truth. Be sure your analysis is sensitive to the both the formal and thematic aspects of the texts in question. Papers require no outside sources and they should be formatted according to MLA style.
 
Requirements: The following are required elements in your paper. Please be sure to include them!
· Your paper must be argumentative. This means that you need a thesis that you argue throughout the paper. You must support your thesis with textual evidence. In other words, you must use quotes to support your argument. If you are unsure what an argumentative paper looks like, please come see me.
· Your paper must analyze two texts from two different genres.
· Your paper must demonstrate knowledge of the formal elements of each genre.
· Your analysis should be detailed and persuasive.
· Your paper should be clear, logical, and well organized.
· Your paper should be formatted according to MLA format. You must provide citations for your quotations. You will need a works cited list.
