Instructions:

In this artifact assignment the student is expected to demonstrate understanding of play theorists, investigate the needs of a successful play environment, and recommend coaching strategies for successful play. 

The student must observe a child in at least 3 (15 minute minimum) play activities (dramatic play, block area, manipulative area). There should be little or no interaction with the child. For each play opportunity, you will assess their play in the following areas: Planning, Roles, Props, Extended-Time Frame, Language, & Scenarios (refer to Leong/Bedrova article pdf below). 

Discuss why you have assessed the play at each individual level. For each section highlight the kinds of play you see (solitary play, unoccupied play, parallel play, etc.). 

Recommend coaching qualities that would scaffold children to a higher level on the assessment scale. Discuss your overall findings and experience. (5 page report)
