                                                Each Q. separate document!!!

Answer the following questions. AND READ/ ANSWER EACH QUESTIONS CAREFULLY!!!!

*****WHEN ANSWERING EACH QUESTION YOUR ANSWERS MUST COME FROM EITHER THE CHAPTERS, ARTICLE, AND PRESENTATION BELOW. NO OUTSIDE RESOURCES******

Instructions:

After completing the readings (Chapters 9,10,11,12, and 13 (PDF’s BELOW) and article “Mathematics for Young Children” (PDF BELOW)  and viewing the presentation “Science and Math in the Early Childhood Curriculum” (PDF BELOW) , address the topic/question below. The words “describe,” “define,” or “explain” will require you to add enough detail to your answer to clearly demonstrate an understanding of the construct (Use your own words!!! Do not copy from the text.). Use details and terms from the chapter to support your answer. Also, keep in mind that simply using a word in a sentence does not demonstrate an understanding; using it in context does. For example, saying that children should have access to divergent materials does not show me that you know what is meant by the term divergent. Rather saying something such as the following does show an understanding of the term: Children should have access to divergent materials, such as ______, as they allow the child to explore the multiple ways the materials can be used. This use of the word divergent clearly indicates an understanding of the term. Be sure your definitions and descriptions are demonstrative of this level of awareness.

Read the following below to answer the following questions.

1. Read Chapters 9,10,11,12, and 13 (PDF’s Below)  MUST READ CHAPTERS!!

2. Read article “Mathematics for Young Children” (PDF BELOW)

3. Watch presentation “Science and Math in the Early Childhood Curriculum” (PDF BELOW)

Q1. (NO WORK CITED PAGE) Exactly 250 words

Topic/Question/Prompt:

Describe how science should be incorporated into the preschool curriculum. Include 3 components of a science curriculum in your description. Select a topic/theme from either the physical, life, or earth and space chapters and plan an activity to go with the topic/theme.

****PLEASE HIGHLIGHT OR UNDERLINE THE 3 COMPONENTS & THE TOPIC/THEME FROM EITHER physical, life, or earth and space chapters*******

Tips: Be sure to…

use terms and information from the material
keep in mind that I am not looking at what you “think” is a good idea, but rather, what we as a profession know to be good practice (and this is what the text and presentations provide)
indicate which form of science your topic/theme applies to (physical, life, or earth and space)
you need different activities than what are given in the course material. For example, you can plan an activity on weather even though it is discussed in the text as long as your activity is different from the ones presented.
give enough details in any activities you include so that your classmates could replicate the activity
organize your work

Q2. (NO WORK CITED PAGE) Exactly 250 words

Topic/Question/Prompt:

Describe your position on how math should be incorporated into the early childhood curriculum.  For instance, do you feel formal, direct instruction should take place?  Should it be all incidental?  Should there be a combination of the two?  Provide 4 examples of appropriate ways to include math and support your opinion with references from the readings. 2 of the examples should be of informal math experiences children encounter during their play. 2 examples should be specific activities you would put on a lesson plan.

****PLEASE HIGHLIGHT OR UNDERLINE THE 4 EXAMPLES*******
