Part I
Introduce yourself to the class. Who are you? Where are you from and where are you currently living?  What is your interest in the course?  Identify three learning goals you want to achieve in completing PSYC305.
Part II
The history of any subject is of great importance in the process of analysis. What is gained by studying the history of psychology? Discuss why psychology can be described both as a science and as a non-science. Include in your answer the characteristics of science that some psychologists are unwilling to accept while studying humans.

For many centuries, philosophers have attempted to answer questions regarding the roles of the mind and body and their interactions with each other. Provide an analysis of the debate between the theories of dualism and monism. Choose the theory you believe to be most credible. Support your perspective with research and everyday examples.

Week 3 Forum
This week we examine the history of the physiological influence within psychology, including the concept of psychophysics and Galton’s genetics.

Discuss the ways in which the understanding of biology has affected and continues to affect the practice of psychology today. What are the advantages and controversies surrounding this understanding?
Include at least three everyday examples that you have observed. Try to avoid being too general or providing “just common sense” examples which anybody might know without taking this course.  Link the everyday examples to concepts from your assigned readings to date. For each example, provide media content (video web links, charts or graphs etc.) to further illustrate your point.

Week 4 Forum
In Week 4, we learn about different theories of personality development. There are many theorists who believe that personality development is solidified in early childhood, whereas others view the potential for significant personality change throughout one’s childhood and adult life.
In this forum, explain your position on personality development. How do you see personality? Of the theorists we discussed this week, which seems to fit with your view of personality formation? Which concepts or stages do you find most similar to your view?

Week 6 Forum
This week we discuss psychology and its more recent ideas about the causes of human behavior, including Gestalt, Neobehaviorism and Freud. Freud’s work is a popular topic of discussion in the field of psychology. While most do not accept his work as ‘scientific,’ many of his principles and theories are considered valid.

Identify two of Freud’s principles or theories that you believe are valid. Support your perspective with at least three examples.

In Week 7, we examine the advances in psychology including neuropsychology, the cognitive revolution, and the ethics that guide them.

1. What ethical issues arise from this investigative practice? In your forum, include a discussion of the woman in India found guilty of a crime with little evidence except a brain scan. Could this method be used in the United States in the near future? Why or why not?
2. Discuss the ways in which the understanding of biology/genetics has affected and continues to affect the development of ethical laws and moral standards within the field of contemporary psychology. What are some of the controversies surrounding this understanding? Provide specific examples.
